Area is only the first step
The basic drywall estimate divides wall area by sheet area and adds waste. Real projects can be more complicated because partitions have two faces, rated systems can use multiple layers and ceilings are measured differently. AmountHub keeps the simple estimate visible and adds planning controls for those common project details.
Worked example
A 12 m wall run at 2.5 m high has 30 m² of gross face area. A 1.2 m × 2.4 m sheet covers 2.88 m². The theoretical minimum is just over ten sheets; with 10% waste the simple estimate rounds to 12 sheets.
If that same wall is a freestanding partition boarded on both faces, the true board area is roughly doubled before waste. The planning options above handle that explicitly.
Openings, faces and layers
| Project detail | Effect on quantity | How AmountHub handles it |
|---|---|---|
| Large door/window | Reduces board area | Optional opening-area deduction. |
| Two-sided partition | Usually doubles face area | Select two boarded faces. |
| Double-layer assembly | Multiplies board area | Select two layers per face. |
| Ceiling | Adds a separate horizontal area | Add ceiling area directly. |
Why sheet orientation still matters
The area method cannot simulate every joint and offcut. Horizontal and vertical layouts can produce different waste, and longer sheets can reduce joints while becoming harder to handle. For a large project, sketching the board layout can reveal whether a different sheet length reduces waste or labor.
Sheet sizes are editable for a reason
Board dimensions vary by market, product and application. Enter the sheet you actually plan to buy rather than relying on a fixed standard. Common examples include 1.2 × 2.4 m, 1.2 × 3.0 m, 4 × 8 ft and 4 × 12 ft.
Rated assemblies need the specification
Fire, acoustic and moisture-resistant wall systems depend on the complete tested assembly: board type, thickness, layers, fastener spacing, framing and joint treatment. This calculator estimates quantity only and should not be used to redesign a rated wall system.
Before ordering boards
- Count both faces of freestanding partitions.
- Use the actual board size available locally.
- Deduct only meaningful openings.
- Follow the specified layer count for rated systems.
- Keep joint compound, tape, screws and corner bead as separate estimates.
